The Eternal Debate: Vert vs. Ho

It's the first question every new captain or coach faces: "What stack are we running?"

While many teams default to what they've always done, the most successful teams choose an offensive system that maximizes their specific roster's strengths. Here is how to decide between the two most popular systems in ultimate frisbee.

The Vertical Stack: The Classic Choice

The Vertical Stack (Vert) lines up your cutters in a straight line down the center of the field, leaving the "lanes" open for cuts.

Best For:

  • Teams with dominant individual cutters: If you have 2-3 players who can beat anyone in the air or on an under-cut, Vert gives them the space they need.
  • Deep-heavy rosters: The vertical stack creates clear deep lanes that are easy for handlers to see and lead.
  • Developing teams: It is generally easier to teach the "flow" of a vertical stack to newer players.

The Downside:

It can be easier to poach if the defense is disciplined, and it requires handlers who can break the mark to access the "break side" lane.

The Horizontal Stack: The Modern Engine

The Horizontal Stack (Ho) spreads three handlers across the width of the field and puts four cutters in a line across the field (usually at the "break" and "open" sides).

Best For:

  • Agile, small-ball teams: If your team excels at quick movement, short passes, and "dish-and-go" play, the Ho stack is for you.
  • Strong handler cores: Ho relies heavily on handler movement and the ability to swing the disc quickly to change the angle of attack.
  • Playing in the wind: Spreading the field makes it harder for a zone defense to clamp down on a single area.

The Downside:

It requires a high level of coordination. If cutters get in each other's way, the Ho stack can quickly become a "clogged" nightmare.

Making the Decision

To choose the right system, ask your leadership these three questions:

  1. What is our handler depth? (More than 3 reliable handlers? Consider Ho. Only 1-2? Stick to Vert.)
  2. Are our cutters faster or more technical? (Fast and athletic? Vert. Technical and good at clearing? Ho.)
  3. What is our goal for the season? (Winning now? Go with what people know. Building for the future? Experiment with what fits your long-term vision.)

Conclusion

There is no "wrong" answer, only the answer that fits your team today. Many elite teams actually use both—starting in a Horizontal stack to move the disc, and switching to a Vertical stack in the endzone.
